Good stuff. John Petrucci. Dream Theater was a tight band.
I saw Petrucci play in the G3 live tour. Joe Satriani showed him the ropes. Steve Vai www.vai.com made them both look like kids.

You're kidding, right? I've seen G3 play and also DT in concert and I listen/have listened to all their music in heavy rotation at some point in the last five years. Petrucci is a far better pure shredder than Vai or Satch. Vai's amazing with the compositions especially with the 2-3 part guitar harmonies. And Satch is the king of tapping and gorgeous melodies. None of them look like kids to me.
Moving past self-indulgent guitar music (which I am guilty of listening to)...
Currently listening to Disappear by Jars Of Clay.

Why would one move past self-indulgent guitar music?

I was a bit harsh in using "kids" as a comparison of Steve Vai to John Petrucci and Joe Satriani.
Without a doubt John and Joe are incredible musicians with serious credentials.
Dream Theatre has some wonderful and complex compositions which sometimes can overshadow Petrucci's talent.
Joe Satriani....well....he did teach Vai in the early years. How's that for job reference?
Steve Vai - my personal favorite. You really have to listen to alot of his stuff over and over before it begins to make any sense. I just believe he has more chops than anyone else out there. Have you paid close attention to some of his multiple guitar parts? He is a master in the studio and is known to layer 10+ guitar tracks simultaneously creating controlled chaos. It is truly superhuman. Pick up a copy of "Real Illusions: Reflections" and listen to it 5 or 6 times. Incredible.
If you were around for Frank Zappa (another wickedly talented musician) and like modern twist, then Steve Vai is the best alternative.
